Roof garden of Porxos d’en Xifré, Spain

High above the busy dockland area of Barcelona, a seemingly wild roof garden graces the historic building complex of Porxos d’en Xifré.

Valletta Design Cluster, Malta

950 trees, shrubs, ground cover plants, climbing plants, flowers and grasses across a roof area of 495 m² on a 400-year-old building – the design of the roof garden on the Valletta Design Cluster is as rich in detail and artistic as the entire infrastructure project in Valletta, Malta’s city of culture. The Design Cluster is the new heart of the artistic and cultural scene in Malta and the inspired roof garden is open to the public as a community space.

Where will the journey take us?

People need sound ecosystems to live in. The catastrophic flooding that occurred in Germany in the summer of 2021 is one of the most painful experiences that will accelerate a change in attitude among policy makers and within society.  And, it is not before time.

Urban Farming in Toronto

“Fresh ingredients taste better” is the guiding principle of the farm to table movement and nothing could be more natural than using your own roof for growing herbs, vegetables or even hops. The Avling Kitchen and Brewery in Toronto has proven this with their 400 m² roof garden that supplies all kinds of ingredients for their own brewery and restaurant.

The former wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market in the Valby district of Copenhagen will be replaced by the year 2025 by a modern residential area with approx. 3,000 mixed use apartments, in addition to shops, cafés and offices. With an area of 23,000 m², Grønttorvet Park is the green heart of the project, covering the underground car park that is 9,000 m² in size.

Greening the barrel roof of a winery

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao in Haro, a winery steeped in tradition and innovation, is located in the ancient wine-growing region of Rioja Alta in the north east of Spain. Apart from its world-renowned exclusive wines, it now has a green roof that is just as exclusive. By using three different ZinCo systems, a perfectly fitting green roof was installed on the barrel roof of the new winery, ranging from flat to steep-pitched, and covering an area of about 2,000 m² and arched up to 35°.

Olea All Suite Hotel on Zakynthos

The Greek island of Zakynthos is characterised by rich vegetation, which enables the Olea All Suite Hotel and its 7,170 m² to blend easily and naturally into the hilly landscape. The reason is that the roofs on all of the individual buildings – an area of about 2,000 m² in total – are greened, row for row.

Roof terrace flooring on pedestals

Pedestals are perfect for roof walkway and terrace floorings. The reason is that roofs often do not have the load-bearing capacity to carry the weight of the base layer, the bedding material and the flooring, and the material is also awkward to transport and distribute with this design. On the other hand, it is easy to use the well-known ZinCo Elefeet® pedestals that are now being launched on the market in a new and expanded version that includes a rail system.

Parisian roof terrace at the Pavillon d’Armenonville

The Pavillon d’Armenonville in Paris offers an exceptional and prestigious backdrop for corporate and private events. The architecturally appealing building hosts guests in six lounges and in a stylish 515 m² roof garden. A host of different vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are grown there in 26 plant beds in which the ZinCo system build-up “Urban Farming” has been installed. In this way, the garden delivers tasty ingredients, fresh from the rooftop, for the gourmet kitchen of the caterer and event manager, Butard Enescot.

Versatile and extremely flexible

When properly tailored to suit the building, solar energy systems on roofs have huge potential. Today’s systems are perfectly designed for minimum installation effort and maximum yield from operation. It is for this very reason that photovoltaic systems, in particular, are used increasingly in combination with green roofs, as the latter produce considerable synergy effects thanks to their superimposed load and low ambient temperature.
